COMMUNITY - FREEDOM - NATURE

The future. Although no one knows what exactly will happen in the future, you can study trends to see

where society is going. For example, climate change has become an increasingly large problem and a concern for us and our future generations. With this concern for nature, it becomes especially important

for the construction industry to combine sustainability with flexibility. Flexibility is at least as important as sustainability, because both life and the future way of life may change. What do you do with a house when

the children have moved out? How and with whom will you live in 2049?

Judging by all statistics, the nuclear family will not constitute a large majority o the future. Most likely, you will instead live together with other people, which will be the new definition, i.e. a group of people who live in the same house. Even lifestyles will and have already begun to change due to technology, the covid-19 pandemic and the growing mental illness.

Unlike the majority of Europe, the Nordics are characterized by colder and darker winters as well

as long and bright summer days. Something else

that is generally known about the Nordic region is its large proportion of forests, where wood becomes an obvious building material in the construction industry. While at the same time, with the help of glass, we can take advantage of the much-needed sunlight.

In Villa Furundlig, the focus is on people and the well- being of the earth. This can be seen, among other things, in the transition between the public, private spaces and nature in combination with the flexibility of being able to adapt the interior rooms. This flexibility is made possible by the load-bearing shell of the house, which, unlike the inside, must stand for as long as possible. Why not aim for 500 years?

Form

Villa wonderful is designed to enhance the social community in the house. This by creating visual and spatial connections between the private and social zones in the house. The form also creates a framed and social patio. The house is 232 m2, optimized and able to house 4-10 people with good comfort, without creating unused surfaces.

Modules

In the two wings of the villa, there are four changing zones distributed over two levels, all with the same dimensions. The zones are based on a system with three 2x4 meter modules that create the possibility to vary the number of rooms and uses in the zone. Outside the three units there is a transverse buffer zone of 2x6 meters to achieve maximum flexibility. The purpose of the module is to offer flexible and accessible changeability within the standing frames that make up the home.

Installations

The villa’s installation, such as water, electricity and sewage, are gathered in three of the load-bearing

and permanent interior walls. This is to achieve a

high degree of flexibility in the location, size and number of kitchens and bathrooms without limiting the changeability of the wings. It also offers the possibility for a smoother renovation of the installations over time.

Flexibility

The frame consists of wooden columns and wooden beams with

a cross-section of 30x150mm, placed with a horizontal gap of 90cm. This space consists of an adaptable facade and outer wall consisting of either window glass, insulated outer wall, wooden panel, superimposed wooden trellis or a combination of these. By varying between these, the expression of the facade as well as

the light admission and the interior can be regulated according to taste and preference. Within the changing zones, interior walls can be flexibly connected to the load-bearing frame to create different numbers and sizes of rooms.

Flexibility

Villa Furunderlig consists of three different zones; the common, private and buffer zone. The zones can be adapted as needed depending on how the modules are designed. The beige zone represents the common core of the home consisting of fixed functions such as the hall and staircase as well

as a larger room with a double height ceiling to create sight lines between the floors and zones.
